Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife and two children were among six people killed in a small plane crash Thursday at a regional airport north of Charlotte, N.C., authorities said.

The Cessna C550, a light corporate jet, had six people on board when it crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County around 10:15 a.m. EST, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Racer Garrett Mitchell, known professionally as a YouTuber by the name Cleetus McFarland, confirmed the news of the Biffles' deaths in a Facebook post.

"Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma and son Ryder were on that plane," he wrote, "because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us. We are devastated. I'm so sorry to share this."
