Dec. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday it has trained a record number of new recruits, and in new ways to deter undocumented migrants from crossing the border.

The new recruits, many who are Latino, Spanish-speaking and from border towns, will be trained at the agency's academy in Artesia, N.M, according to CNN. They will be taught more assertive tactics than previous recruits, and the training will include vehicle chases.

Better weapons technology is also being newly introduced to the training curriculum, which CBP leaders say is the result of a broader agency makeover by President Donald Trump, an agenda item he announced at the start of his second term.

Changes at the agency come amid Trump's pledge to deport undocumented migrants, and as Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions have been increased in large, predominantly Democrat-led U.S. cities, despite pushback from local and state policing agencies who say they don't need the help from ICE or the National Guard, whose soldiers have also been deployed.
