The European Parliament on Tuesday voted to strip Italian MEP Alessandra Moretti of her parliament immunity following a request from Belgian prosecutors investigating the Qatargate corruption case.

But the parliament voted to maintain the immunity of Moretti's Democratic Party (PD) colleague Elisabetta Gualmini.

The names of the two MEPs were first mentioned at the beginning of the bribery case that exploded in December 2022.

Several Italians including former MEP Antonio Panzeri, one of the alleged ringleaders, are accused of involvement in corruption in order to sway the European Parliament's positions.

The scandal hinges on suspicions that Qatar and Morocco bribed lawmakers, parliamentary assistants and non-governmental organisations to influence decision-making in the European assembly.
