Dec. 15 (Asia Today) -- South Korea's HJ Heavy Industries said Monday it has secured a maintenance, repair and overhaul contract for a U.S. Navy logistics vessel, calling it the first U.S. Navy MRO deal won by a mid-sized Korean shipbuilder.
The company said it signed an intermediate maintenance contract for the 41,000-ton dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Amelia Earhart, operated under U.S. Navy logistics and sea transportation commands. Work is set to begin in January at HJ Heavy Industries' Yeongdo shipyard in Busan, with delivery to the U.S. Navy expected around late March.
HJ Heavy Industries said the maintenance package includes inspections of the hull and major systems, repairs, parts replacement and repainting.
Commissioned in 2008, the USNS Amelia Earhart supports U.S. naval operations by delivering ammunition, food, repair parts, provisions and limited quantities of fuel to aircraft carrier sand other ships at sea, the company said. The vessel is named for American aviator Amelia Earhart, who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
