A training wall will be built soon at the mouth of the Vellaiyar at the coastal village of Serudhur near Velankanni.

The wall has been sanctioned by the State government at an estimate of ₹21.83 crore. The structure would prevent formation of sand bars and direct the flow of the river water into the sea. This apart, short groynes would be built at a cost of ₹17.78 crore, with NABARD funding, in Velankanni Town Panchayat to prevent sea erosion.

The foundation stones for both the projects were unveiled by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Thursday. N. Gowthaman, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation; V.P. Nagai Mali, MLA; and P. Akash, Collector, were present.

Mr. Poyyamozhi unveiled the foundation stones for a fish landing centre in Velankanni Town Panchayat, and auction halls at Kameswaram, Vizhunthamavadi, and Vanavan Mahadevi villages, sanctioned at a cost of ₹4.33 crore each.

The Minister inaugurated a fish market established by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation in Velankanni Town Panchayat, besides new classroom buildings for the panchayat union middle school at Thenpathi and fish net weaving building at Vizhunthamavadi Meenavar Colony during the day.
