President Donald Trump said it appeared the alleged Venezuelan drug cartels attacked by U.S. military in the Caribbean in September were trying to salvage the wreckage, he told Politico in a new interview published Monday—distancing himself from making decisions on how to handle the fallout from the controversial strikes.

Trump told Politico in a wide-ranging interview: “It looked like they were trying to turn back over the boat,” adding, “but I don’t get involved in that,” when asked if the second strike that killed two survivors of the initial attack was necessary.

Trump made similar comments about the footage Monday, when he said “they were trying to return the boat back to where it could float, and we didn’t want to see that because that boat was loaded up with drugs.”
