Dec. 3 (UPI) -- DNA matched a known serial killer to the death of a Colorado woman nearly 40 years ago.
Rhonda Marie Fisher was found dead on April 1, 1987. Fisher, 30, was reportedly sexually assaulted and strangled to death when her body was discovered 35 miles south of Denver along a rural highway, according to authorities.
"Obtaining a viable DNA profile from paper bags nearly four decades old is exceptionally rare and underscores the extraordinary value of meticulous evidence preservation and periodic forensic reevaluation," the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Officials said DNA located on a pair of paper bags belongs to "prolific serial killer" Vincent Darrell Groves.
The sheriff's office reopened the investigation this year into Fisher's death.
