Dec. 3 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is granting a pardon to Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, who was indicted on bribery and money laundering last year.

The charges allege that Cuellar accepted nearly $600,000 in bribes from an oil company owned by the Azerbaijan government and a Mexican bank, then laundered the funds.

The scheme allegedly took place from 2014 to 2021, the indictment said. In August, a judge dismissed two of the charges at the request of the Department of Justice. A trial was set for next year.

In his post on Truth Social, the president claimed that the Biden administration charged Cuellar because he was a political opponent and he "bravely spoke out against Open Borders, and the Biden Border 'Catastrophe.'"
