Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has said that the country is at present witnessing the decolonisation of education.

Mr. Arlekar, who is also the Chancellor of State-run universities, was speaking at Lok Bhavan here on Tuesday while formally releasing Honest John, a biography authored by Bakhtiar K. Dadabhoy on India’s first Railway Minister in the post-Independence era John Matthai, who also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala. The Governor also launched a series of Malayalam MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) developed by the University of Calicut.

Emphasising the importance of educational progress, the Governor said that both the National Education Policy, 2020, and the Union government’s initiatives focussed on strengthening and modernising the sector. He also highlighted the importance of mother tongue in education.

Recalling John Matthai’s contributions as an educationist and economist, the Governor observed that Matthai was a man of great honesty and integrity. However, the contributions of many Keralites, including V.P. Menon, have not been adequately reflected in the post-Independent history of the nation.

The MOOCs were designed by the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) of the University of Calicut. It is for the first time that a university has launched a MOOC in Malayalam language.
