Some families are not buying any presents for the holidays – and have asked others not to buy them gifts.

And they’re not alone.

In a study this fall by Empower, 33% of people surveyed said they were not asking for gifts this year.

The “no gifts” trend suggests a counter-trend to consumerism, said Rebecca Rickert, Empower's head of consumer insights.

“Not giving gifts is certainly an economic signal, but it’s also becoming its own act of generosity,” Rickert told USA TODAY. “It takes the pressure off the other person to give.”
