A college freshman traveling to surprise her family with a Thanksgiving visit was instead deported to Honduras by immigration officials in violation of a court order, her attorney said.
Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a 19-year-old student at Babson College in Boston, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Logan International Airport on Nov. 20. while on her way to see family in Austin, Texas.
The agents told Lopez Belloza, who moved from Honduras to the U.S. at the age of 7, that she had a deportation order stemming from 2015, the Associated Press reported. But her attorney said he hasn’t found any records of her deportation – only one indicating her case was closed in 2017.
“They’re holding her responsible for something they claim happened a decade ago that she’s completely unaware of and not showing any of the proof,” her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, told the publication.
After Lopez Belloza was arrested, a federal judge issued an emergency order prohibiting the government from moving her out of the U.S. for at least 72 hours, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
