Thanksgiving week is forecast to be colder and snowier than usual across large swaths of the U.S., according to the National Weather Service (NWS), while AAA is projecting record road traffic over the holiday period.

The NWS is warning the "polar vortex," an area of frigid air around the Arctic, will expand southwards and bring significantly colder-than-normal temperatures across much of the U.S. by Thursday and Friday.

AAA is projecting nearly 82 million people, a record number, will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Thanksgiving holiday period from Tuesday, Nov. 25 to Monday, Dec. 1.
