COP30 ends with roadmap to end deforestation, ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels
The 30th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP 30) in Belem, Brazil, drew to a close late Saturday (November 22, 2025) with COP President Andrei Lago giving a personal commitment to get countries to deliberate upon two ‘road maps’ to end deforestation as well as a path towards ending fossil fuel use by countries. Developing countries (including some petro states and India) were insistent on not including language that commits countries to a timeline on eliminating fossil fuel from their economies.

Global parameters of growth need to be reconsidered, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday (November 22, 2025), addressing the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, where he promoted the BJP’s political philosophy of “integral humanism” and proposed new initiatives on traditional knowledge, healthcare and skill development, among others. Leaders also adopted the G-20 declaration on Day 1 of the two-day summit, calling for strong measures to counter climate change. PM Modi also held talks with a number of leaders present, announcing a new Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership after a trilateral meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Canadian PM Mark Carney.
