Grokipedia, Elon Musk’s answer to Wikipedia, repeatedly cites neo-Nazi, conspiracy theorist and white nationalist websites, according to NBC News. The report, which references analysis from Cornell University researchers Harold Triedman and Alexios Mantzarlis, noted that Grokipedia cited a neo-Nazi website called Stormfront as a source 42 times, the conspiracy theory website InfoWars 34 times and the white nationalist website VDare 107 times. Triedman previously worked for the Wikimedia Foundation and continues to do contract work for an affiliate of the organization, though he noted this research was independent. Although the researchers’ paper was a preprint, NBC News corroborated several findings. Stormfront was created by a former Ku Klux Klan leader and is described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as what may be the “Western world’s most popular forum for so called ‘white nationalists.’” Infowars has been criticized for spreading conspiracy theories on a number of subjects, including the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school. And SPLC has deemed VDare a “white nationalist website” and a platform that elevates a “nativist agenda.”Wikipedia, conversely, doesn’t “treat those sources as credible,” NBC reported. The researchers’ analysis adds to scrutiny of Grokipedia, which Musk launched a few weeks ago to counter what he’s described as Wikipedia’s “woke” bias. Already, the site’s been observed pushing far-right talking points in its content, according to Wired, and it’s also been mocked for offering a more flattering portrayal of Musk compared to the entry on Wikipedia. “Legacy Media Lies,” a spokesperson for xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, claimed in an email when asked for comment about the NBC News report.
