Sometimes becoming the best in your field means realizing that it’s not your field at all.

For Royal Caribbean Group, becoming one of the best vacation providers in the world meant realizing that, no matter what others might think, it’s not actually a cruise company. It’s a provider of all kinds of all-inclusive vacation experiences, floating city or not.

This means that filling ship staterooms is no longer the company’s only priority, says Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean’s chairman and chief executive officer. Instead, the company focuses on developing long-lasting relationships with customers on water and on land.
