The basic concept of migration has been changing, especially to countries like the US or Canada, said S. Irudaya Rajan, chair, International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD), Thiruvananthapuram, while speaking at a session on burden sharing in skilling between countries of origin and destination at a national conference on international migration held here on Tuesday.

A good number of migrant parents who are settled in other destinations have been encouraging the migration of their wards to countries like the US or Canada in order to move the entire family to their targeted destination. So is the stress of the young aspirants who migrate to these countries. A student or a young migrant who lands in his destination country with a huge loan liability will have to face mental stress along with work stress for a long period, he said. As a result, there has been a rise in suicide cases of Indians in countries like Canada, where at least one migrant attempts suicide every week, said Mr. Rajan, quoting health professionals in Canada.

The 5th national conference on ‘Mobility for a New Era: Rethinking International Migration and Mobility Narratives and Frameworks’ jointly organised by IIMAD, and the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), New Delhi, concluded here on Tuesday.
