Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway for the first time purchased shares of Google's parent company, Alphabet, worth $4.9 billion, as the company expanded its tech holdings.

The public company bought 17.86 million shares in a 13F-HR third-quarter filing Sept. 30, with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is the 10th largest equity holding for the company, which has a $300 billion stock portfolio.

Berkshire Hathaway's market capitalization is worth $1.1 trillion.

On Monday, Berkshire Hathaway closed down $5.68 to $503.26 from the record of $539.80 on May 2 on Nasdaq. For the year, the stock is up 11.57%.
