LONDON: Jordan will call up the first group of conscripts for military service in 2026 after parliament approved the National Service and Reserve Service Law of 2025 with a majority vote on Monday.
Jordanian men born in 2007 who turn 18 by Jan. 1, 2026, will serve in the armed forces in February. The annual selection will consist of 6,000 young men, divided into three phases of 2,000 each.
Mohammed Momani, the government spokesperson, said that the conscription selection process was conducted using a neutral statistical draw, employing computerized methods and adhering to scientific criteria.
He added that the decision follows Crown Prince Hussein’s announcement from last August to reactivate the National Service Program (Conscription), frozen in 1991.
“(This is) a national step to prepare and qualify young people through military training and a theoretical course organized under the National Service and Reserve Service Law,” he said, according to news agency Petra.
