Urging the district administration to hand over Mannapalla lake in Manipal to Udupi City Municipal Council for maintenance and comprehensive development, MLA Yashpal Suvarna has warned of launching an agitation if the lake is handed over to a private agency for development under PPP model.

In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, which was released to the media on November 12, Mr. Suvarna said there has been consistent public demand for the CMC taking over the maintenance and development of the historic lake, by whose name Manipal got its name.

Spread over about 120 acres and witnessing primary development work, Mannapalla has been in a state of neglect because of lack of maintenance. Mannapalla has been the largest open water body in Udupi-Manipal region, and has the potential to be developed as a major tourist attraction with proper planning.
