Aurora Borealis could be visible across the northern United States Wednesday night and as far south as Nebraska as space weather forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict “severe” geomagnetic storms.
NOAA predicts geomagnetic storms—which are caused by solar activity disrupting Earth's upper atmosphere—to start Wednesday and continue through Friday.
NOAA forecast a Kp index, which measures global geomagnetic activity, at a high of 7.67 Monday night, 6.6 on Thursday and 4.67 in the early hours of Friday, suggesting the northern lights could be visible in the lower 48 states.
