“Daily Show” correspondent Josh Johnson on Tuesday scorched President Donald Trump over his proposal to send each American at least $2,000 from the tariff revenue that his administration has taken in.Johnson — who joked that Trump will make Americans “exhausted from affording” things — reacted to a clip of the president claiming that the dividends will be issued to low and middle-income Americans.“Trump’s making everybody pay tariffs, but only poor people are getting the $2,000 checks, so he’s just redistributing taxes from rich people to poor people. Did — did Donald Trump just stupid himself into socialism?” Johnson quipped.Johnson went on to insist that Trump was doing a “great job” and that Americans “always believed” in him, before turning to a camera positioned to his side.“Everybody shut up, alright? Don’t say a word, let this play out, and we’ll have free health care by Christmas, all right?” he whispered.Earlier in his monologue, Johnson took on Trump for floating plans for 50-year mortgages. He tossed to a “Good Morning America” report that found a $400,000, 50-year loan at 6% interest would see $2,105 monthly payments and a total interest of $863,371.“That is the opposite of affordability. This man is creating generational debt,” Johnson said.“They’re going to be fighting to get out of grandma’s will! Grandkids will be like, ‘I barely knew her, all right? I wouldn’t even hug her at Christmas because her skin was too loose!’”Check out more of Johnson’s Tuesday monologue on “The Daily Show.”Close
