The Supreme Court on Thursday (November 6, 2025) heard the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and others accused in the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020.

Senior advocate Sanjeev Luthera appearing for Shadab Ahmad argued that organising or participating in protests are not criminal offence. Mr. Ahmad was arrested on April 6, 2020, and was subsequently charged under UAPA.

During the hearing on Monday (November 3, 2025), the activists Meeran Haider, Umar Khalid, Shifa-ur-Rehman, and others accused in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots told the Supreme Court that they became aware of the completion of the investigation against them only on September 4, 2024.

The hearing will resume on Monday, November 10, 2025.
