Speaking during a rally in Brooklyn on Wednesday (5 November), the 34-year-old Democrat told his supporters that they have clinched the victory “against all odds”, after he beat Andrew Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York. “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” he said, after securing 50.4 per cent of the vote. He is the first Muslim, first South Asian, and youngest person in more than a century to be elected as the Big Apple's mayor.
