Rescue efforts were underway on Monday, Nov. 3 after a building under renovation in the heart of Rome collapsed, injuring at least one person, local officials confirmed.

The catastrophe, which took place about noon local time, sent one person working on a medieval tower to a hospital while another remained trapped under rubble and debris at the Torre dei Conti.

"We are trying to get him out alive but the situation is complex because of the risk of further collapses," Luca Cari, a spokesperson for Rome's fire department, told Reuters.

The building in the heart of Italy's capital is near the famous Colosseum.

Regional President Francesco Rocca, who spoke to Italian news agencies and posted an update on social media, said the hospitalized worker suffered non life-threatening injuries, and two other workers rescued suffered minor injuries. Those workers declined to be taken to a hospital, Rocca said.
