The chair of the city council in the northern city of Bolzano was fitted with an electronic ankle tag and served restraining orders for alleged domestic abuse against his partner in the presence of their children.
The man, Carlo Vettori, 43, a member of Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, has been charged with aggravated mistreatment for having committed the act in the presence of his minor children, aggravated injury for having committed the act against his cohabiting partner, and damage.
Vettori has resigned from his position after being reported by his wife.
