SEOUL, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- South Korean food giant Otoki Co. Ltd. said Monday it would launch fish-shaped pastries in four flavors later this year, directly targeting the U.S. market.
The fish-shaped pastry is one of the most popular foods sold by street vendors in Seoul, and Otoki promised to come up with similar street products to expand its global footprint.
Observers note that a growing number of Korean companies care more about foreign markets as uniquely Korean products, such as frozen gimbap, continue to rise abroad. Gimbap is made of rice and assorted fillings rolled in dried seaweed.
"In the past, Korean food makers mainly focused on domestic markets. But things have changed rapidly over the past several years as Korean food has gained popularity overseas," Inha University consumer science Professor Lee Eun-hee told UPI. "The trend is expected to continue for the time being."
