An ex-senior adviser to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign has criticized the president over his reported push for the Justice Department to reimburse him $230 million for defending himself against federal criminal probes and charges.

The nine-figure ask — first reported by The New York Times on Tuesday — could be settled by Trump’s former personal attorney, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. One critic has since described the proposed payment as the “most corrupt act in presidential history.”

CNN political commentator David Urban told host Kasie Hunt that most of the cases brought against Trump were “just egregious” before echoing the Times’ Lulu Garcia-Navarro, who noted that “taxpayer money” may be “going into the president’s pocketbook.”

“This is taxpayer dollars, right? If the president wants to get an apology from the Department of Justice or from somebody for doing him wrong, one thing. For John Q. Public to come out of their checkbook to pay him money, it’s not like Donald Trump’s brand has been hurt by that, right?” he began.
