heap green hydrogen seems like an ideal clean fuel, but thus far isn’t being produced at high volume and low cost. That’s because of the need to use iridium, a remarkably pricey and scarce element, in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, devices that make hydrogen by using electricity–ideally from renewable sources–to split water molecules, releasing only oxygen as a byproduct.
