The Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations (FNCRWA) on Thursday submitted a petition to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urging the government to withdraw the proposed waste-to-energy (WtE) incineration project at Kodungaiyur dump yard.

The FNCRWA president T.K. Shanmugam said the Chief Minister had assured them that a committee would be formed to review the issue in the presence of the Chief Secretary. “The Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam was brought in by this government. So, development towards improving livelihoods under this scheme in the Kodungaiyur dump yard must be considered,” he added.

According to the petition, the residents sought the cancellation of the WtE plant, which proposes to burn 2,100 tonnes of waste daily, citing serious health and environmental risks such as air pollution and toxic metal emissions.

The petition, also signed by CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam and the Federation of Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, added that residents had long suffered from diseases caused by the existing dump yard and the project would worsen the situation.
