A gang of unidentified persons broke into the house of an 80-year-old woman, and decamped with four sovereigns of gold jewellery at Thirumullaivoyal in Avadi on Wednesday night.
Police said the victim, Vatsala, 80, stays on the ground floor of her house at Valal Nagar, while her son and his family reside on the first floor.
Around midnight, the group of masked men, armed with weapons, allegedly broke open the back gate and entered the house.
They stole a gold chain and a pair of earrings weighing around four sovereigns while Vatsala was asleep. When she woke up and raised an alarm, the suspects fled the scene.
