YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) public representatives appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and stop the alleged privatization of government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The party’s Alur MLA Virupakshi, MLC Madhusudan and Zilla Parishad Chairman Errabothula Papi Reddy submitted a representation to the Prime Minister during the latter’s visit to Kurnool on Thursday (October 16) opposing the move by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu government to privatise government medical colleges.Speaking to media, they said that while former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had initiated 17 government medical colleges, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu is now attempting to hand them over to his favoured individuals through privatization. They strongly condemned the government’s move to allow single-tender bids, calling it highly objectionable and financially irresponsible. They expressed anger that established regulations were being compromised to benefit private entities close to the ruling leadership. The YSRCP leaders said efforts made by former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to provide medical education and quality healthcare to the poor are now being systematically dismantled. They recalled that five medical colleges were completed and academic classes had begun during the previous government, while construction of two more colleges had been completed last year. They warned that handing over institutions meant to serve the public under the government sector to private hands in bulk would severely harm the poor and middle-class families. They also pointed out that even in BJP-ruled States, newly established medical colleges are being run by the government and not handed over to private parties.
