The Italian federation of newspaper publishers FIEG said Wednesday that it has filed a complaint to the nation's communications authority Agcom against Google's AI Overviews service.

FIEG says the AI Overview summaries are killing traffic to its members' websites with an inevitable impact on advertising revenues.

Similar complaints are being filed in other countries, coordinated by the European Newspaper Publishers' Association (ENPA), with the aim of getting the European Commission to open proceedings under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

They say Google is violating some key provisions of the DSA with the introduction of AI Overviews, and, more recently, with the AI Mode feature, which gets rid of traditional search results entirely.
