Antidepressants can be a powerful tool in helping deal with depression symptoms, medical experts say.

Depression, also referred to as major depressive disorder or clinical depression, is a condition that can cause severe symptoms related to the way you feel, think and go about doing daily activities, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Common symptoms include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal and physical symptoms including unexplained headaches, digestive problems or other aches and pains, psychiatrist Dr. Judith Joseph previously told USA TODAY.

In 2023, an estimated 11.4% of adult Americans used some form of antidepressant in order to mitigate those symptoms, according to the most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data. Here's what experts want you to know about antidepressants.
