The Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials have filed a 380-page chargesheet against 11 individuals accused of posting indecent comments and sending abusive messages to actor and former Mandya MP Ramya on her social media account.
The CCB has invoked BNS Sections pertaining to outraging the modesty of a woman, issuing online threats and sexual abuse, and using cyberspace for criminal activities. The punishment under these sections ranges from three to seven years of imprisonment, along with fines.
A senior police officer overseeing the investigation said that all technical details, including the identities of the message senders, their electronic devices, and the statements recorded from both the accused and the victim, have been submitted.
“This is a preliminary chargesheet, as more accused persons will be arrested. The victim had listed 44 different social media profiles in her complaint,” the officer said.
In July, Ms. Ramya, also known as Divya Spandana, had shared the Supreme Court’s observations regarding the murder of a Chitradurga man named Renukaswamy, in which Kannada actor Darshan is an accused. Her post on social media triggered an online backlash from Darshan’s fans, who allegedly abused her and issued threats.
