Best friends Duncan Birch and Nick Smith, both 43, decided to spend the weekend camping in Snowdonia on a whim, having booked the campsite 'last minute' after it was recommended by a friend.

After arriving on the Sunday, they quickly set up camp and decided to go canoeing in the nearby Llyn Gwynant lake.

Duncan and Nick had barely been on the water for 20 minutes, when they spotted a man flailing at the edge of the lake, next to a huge rock face, and quickly paddled over to investigate.

Moments earlier, the injured man had plunged around 100ft and hit a rocky ledge, breaking both his legs and knocking him unconscious, before plunging into the water.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Duncan recalled seeing the man, who had partially regained consciousness at this point, covered in blood and looking 'white as a sheet'.
