Sir Lenny Henry has had an extraordinary five-decade career as a trailblazing black comedian, making millions of TV viewers cry with laughter at his jokes.

The actor has also shone a spotlight on racial inequality with his latest intervention being a claim that black Britons should all receive salary reparation payments.

Sir Lenny started out his career in the 1970s in an era where overtly racist jokes were openly told by white comedians and black people were the usual targets.

And the 67-year-old would happily also poke fun at racist stereotypes with his outrageous characters, existing in a world where black comedians were rare.

In recent years he has admitted he regrets some of his creations and thought at the time that he needed to join in with xenophobic jokes to succeed in the industry.
