Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The United States imposed a set of sanctions on Serbia's top oil supplier over its Russian-majority control that will immediately affect the Serbian public.

The U.S. sanctions imposed by Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control went into effect Thursday and target Petroleum Industry of Serbia, which has a majority ownership stake by Kremlin-controlled Gazprom Neft.

The sanctions arrived as the West continued its crackdown on Russia's energy sector following its February 2022 full-on invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

On Thursday, the company stated that a needed special U.S. Treasury license was not renewed in order to permit NIS to operate.
