There was a time when AMD was the scrappy underdog of the semiconductor world. Twenty years ago, few would have imagined that the company would shape the future of global AI infrastructure alongside one of the most powerful players in the field of artificial intelligence.
Yet, that is exactly what AMD has achieved with its new multi-year partnership with OpenAI. This deal marks both a technological milestone and a strategic pivot for the entire data center industry.
6-Gigawatt Statement of Intent
The headline is staggering, and I’m not being hyperbolic. OpenAI will deploy up to six gigawatts’ worth of AMD Instinct GPUs, starting with one gigawatt of MI450 accelerators in the second half of 2026. In raw scale and ambition, this is a defining moment for AMD.
As Forrest Norrod, AMD’s EVP and GM of data center solutions, put it during the company’s briefing, “This deal is hugely transformative, not just for AMD, but also for the dynamics of the industry writ large. It is a strong endorsement of AMD’s technology and its suitability for deployment at the largest scale for the most important models.”
