An ex-Formula 1 ace has been handed a driving ban after he was caught speeding at 96mph.Mark Blundell, 59, was clocked driving his Land Rover 26mph over the 70mph speed limit on the A14 in Cold Ashby, Northamptonshire, on November 30 last year.Blundell, from Arrington, Cambridgeshire, did not attend Wednesday’s hearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court when his barrister entered a guilty plea on his behalf. The former driver, who won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1992 with Peugeot, was slapped with five points on his licence.Under totting up rules, he was handed a six-month ban and ordered to pay a total of £1,042 in fines, costs and victim surcharge. Mark Blundell, who competed in F1 between 1991 and 1995, was handed a six-month ban and ordered to pay a total of £1,042 in fines, costs and victim surchargeBlundell enjoyed a racing career that spanned two decades, from 1984 to 2003, competing in F1 and Le Mans, but also the CART series in the United States.During his F1 career from 1991 to 1995, he raced for Brabham, Tyrrell, Ligier and McLaren, scoring three podiums in 61 starts.Following retirement from motorsports, Blundell started a sports management company, 2MB, in 2004 alongside fellow ex-F1 driver and friend Martin Brundle, who has since devoted his time to his presenting career.Blundell also worked in television for a period as an analyst for ITV's Formula One from 2002 to 2008, with ITV losing the coverage to the BBC.
