Furious bystanders have confronted a young woman as she cut down yellow ribbons for Israeli hostages from a fence in north London.

Video footage showed her with a pair of scissors which she used to brazenly snip the memorial bands that the Jewish community had tied to railings.

Wearing a navy blue bomber jacket and clutching a green, white and purple striped tote bag under her arm, she declared the ribbons were 'condoning genocide'.

Police say they are now reviewing whether the woman's action constitute a hate crime or criminal damage offence.

The Metropolitan Police this afternoon revealed that following the incident, they 'were stepping up patrols in the Muswell Hill area'.
