Schools, faith groups and youth organisations will hold a national day of mourning on Thursday in the wake of the Manchester synagogue attack.

A wide range of institutions are expected to take part in the event organised by the Together Coalition which was co-founded by Brendan Cox, the widower of murdered MP Jo Cox.

Mr Cox said communities across the country were being invited to stage vigils or other gatherings, or to mark the moment within an existing event such as a faith service or meeting.

Dubbed a ‘national day of unity and solidarity’, the organisations involved include the Church of England, the Scouts, the Women’s Institute and the British Muslim Network.

‘The Jewish community has been targeted in the cruellest way, at a time of deep reflection and prayer, and in the context of rising anti-Semitism across the UK,’ said Mr Cox.
