In the wake of death of 14 children, allegedly due to a contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has issued a statement that the syrup was not supplied to any government hospital or drug store in the State and that there is no need for any alarm.In a statement issued to the media on October 6, Monday, Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav directed officials to ensure that medicines in liquid form for cold and cough are not prescribed for children aged below two years. He issued the directions during a meeting with Health and Family Welfare Commissioner G. Veerapandian, A.P. Drug Control Administration In Charge Director General and A.P. Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation Managing Director P.S. Girisha.The officials briefed him about the status of supply of the cough syrup, ‘Coldrif Syrup’, which has been linked to the deaths of children in M.P. and Rajasthan, in the State. In Andhra Pradesh, cough syrups are being supplied by four different companies, the officials told the Minister.Mr. Girisha said there is no evidence of supply of the syrup, manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals, a company based in Tamil Nadu’s Kancheepuram district and which was found to be adulterated with diethylene glycol, in any drug store or government hospital in the State. He added that further inspections are under way.Mr. Veerapandian said District Medical and Health Officers have been asked to ensure the strict implementation of the instructions given by the Director General of the Health Services of India.
