Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran on Sunday accused AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami of “cunningly attempting” to bring the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay into the AIADMK alliance [in the wake of 41 deaths in the stampede at Mr. Vijay’s rally in Karur).Mr. Dhinakaran told presspersons here that the AMMK would not rest until Mr. Palaniswami was defeated in the next Assembly election. Mr. Dhinakaran added that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, with his 50 years of political experience, had been acting with restraint and maturity (on the Karur stampede issue). He cautioned that if the government were to arrest Mr. Vijay in the stampede case, under pressure from alliance parties, it would set a dangerous precedent. “Political meetings, rallies, and conferences are held by all parties. If incidents occur beyond control, will all leaders be arrested? Such actions will eventually affect even the DMK,” he said.Mr. Dhinakaran criticised Mr. Palaniswami for seeking to hold the government responsible for the Karur incident while having failed to accept responsibility for the Thoothukudi police firing in which 13 people were killed during his tenure as Chief Minister.
