Whether lightly or bluntly, many Westerners harbor a persistent irritation toward the French – a certain antipathy that France, in its pride, often pretends not to notice. Underestimated within France itself, this reality becomes tangible when the French travel and hear remarks that have become almost commonplace. For example, "I like you, you don't seem French." This is a common enough experience that it is discussed on online forums like the American sites Reddit and Quora.
Yet French culture continues to enchant the Western world. With 32 million cinema tickets sold internationally, France is now the world's leading exporter of non-English-language films. On the streaming platform Spotify, listens to French-language music have surged by 94% since 2019. And in 2023, LVMH, closely followed by Hermès and Dior, reported revenues exceeding €86 billion, confirming the global reign of French luxury. That same year, France welcomed more tourists than any other country – around 100 million people, with more than six million visiting the Louvre Museum. In other words, if the French have a poor image internationally, it is not due to French culture but rather to the traits and behaviors associated with them as individuals.
