The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday (October 4, 2025) prohibited the sale and distribution of a cough and cold syrup in the State after it was found to be linked to the deaths of nine children in Chhindwara district in the past one month.

As per a government order dated October 4, the Food and Drugs Administration department banned the sale of ‘Coldrif Syrup’ in the State and all other products from its manufacturer — Sresan Pharmaceuticals, based in Tamil Nadu’s Kancheepuram district.

Cough syrup row: Rajasthan government suspends drug controller, halts distribution of Kaysons Pharma drugs

The decision comes a day after the Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department ordered the manufacturer stop the production of Coldrif-branded cough syrup after an analysis by the Government Drugs Testing Laboratory found a batch to be “not of standard quality” and “adulterated with diethylene glycol”.

However, the Union Health Ministry on Friday ruled out that the syrup samples contained diethylene glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG), contaminants that are known to cause serious kidney injury.
