Brits are bracing for a potential 'weather bomb' today as the UK's first named storm of the season is expected to batter the country with torrential rain and 95mph gales.

Storm Amy will arrive in the UK on Friday afternoon, bringing with it disruptive wet weather and 'damaging winds' for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England and northwest Wales.

The Met Office has warned of roofs being blown off houses and power lines brought down as a result of the high speed gales, while dangerous driving conditions and disruption to ferry, air and rail travel are also expected.

Injuries and danger to life is likely along the coast, where large waves and debris may be thrown onto roads, beach fronts and even houses, the forecaster added.

Experts fear Storm Amy could become a 'weather bomb' – a storm that intensifies suddenly and rapidly – with sudden violent winds of hurricane-force strength, heavy rain, flooding and potential 'storm surges'.
