Dame Jane Goodall, the world-renowned British chimpanzee expert, has died aged 91.

Goodall, who was also a noted conservation activist, died of natural causes while on a speaking tour in the United States, her charitable foundation said.

She was known as a giant of the environmental movement who travelled constantly for her work. In a 2022 interview with The Times, she said she had not slept in the same bed for more than three weeks since 1986.

Goodall, from Hampstead in north London, became revered globally for her groundbreaking study of chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, in what is now Tanzania.

Goodall was widely considered the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees. She began her research into the apes in 1960.
