An uneasy situation emerged in Tripura’s Gomati district on Sunday after suspected miscreants vandalised idols at a community Durga puja venue. Police ruled out a conspiracy to incite unrest, while assuring that the situation remained peaceful with adequate security deployment.The incident occurred at Brahmabari in Udaipur, the headquarters of Gomati district, in the early hours. Locals discovered that the idols of deities had been damaged.Gomati district Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar K., along with senior officers, visited the spot. “Police are investigating the incident and the culprits will be brought to justice,” he said.Officers noted that CCTV cameras had not been installed at the puja venue, though their installation had been made mandatory for community Durga pujas.The annual Durga puja, Tripura’s largest social and religious festival, is currently under way with celebrations across the State. Traffic regulation and surveillance units of the police have been deployed to manage vehicle movement and prevent untoward incidents.Director General of Police Anurag warned that strict action would be taken against violations of noise pollution norms, including the use of DJs and high-volume sound systems at puja venues.
