Violence marred elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) held on Sunday (April 12, 2026). There have been reports of several injuries as members of rival political parties clashed, lobbed bombs and attacked vehicles in different locations.

The State Election Commission and the police administration described the voting ‘by and large’ peaceful. Security forces were deployed in strength in sensitive areas and in some places they applied mild force to quell tension and ensured peaceful voting.

Incumbent ruling party in the TTAADC, Tipra Motha, BJP and the CPI(M)-led Left Front are contesting 28 seats of the tribal council, which has limited authority on the State’s three fourth lands. The Congress, which forged an alliance with two smaller parties, is also in the fray.

As expected, the TTAADC elections saw violence, especially in Sepahijala and south Tripura districts. Former CPIM) MLA Prabhat Chowdhury and BJP MLA Abhisek Deb Roy were allegedly attacked and their vehicles damaged by Tipra Motha supporters.
