Farmers in Chinnakallipatti in Sirumugai block of Coimbatore district have urged the district administration to rein in poultry units causing pollution in the village. The villagers complained that their repeated representations since 2023 on excessive disturbance caused by flies have not been addressed by the authorities.Espousing the cause of the villagers, N. Dhandapani, district unit president of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam alleged that the poultry units were flouting guidelines on pollution control.According to Mr. Dhandapani, the committee that the revenue authorities had formed was not prompt in acting on their representation made during July. The farmers were told that a committee constituted by the revenue authorities at the level of Mettupalayam taluk had inspected the poultry unit. However, the committee had visited the poultry unit when it was empty after completion of a breeding cycle. The committee had not responded to the pleas for inspection made during August by the farmers of the village, Mr. Dhandapani said. The contention of the villagers is that the poultry units do not follow the guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board. The poultry units had not followed the guidelines to control the odour caused by generation of ammonia and sulphide gases from the excrement of the birds, and death of the birds. As per the guidelines, the poultry units are required to control flies through proper treatment and disposal of manure, ventilation of sheds, control of temperature, good sanitation, swift repair of leaks, avoidance of feed spills, and prompt removal of broken eggs and dead birds. The poultry farms must be located 500 metres from residential zone, and 100 metres from water course, the guidelines state.
